Christmas time

With the holiday season upon us, things have calmed down in the world of baseball. However, there were some transactions that took place. These transactions are not really worth noting, but the main discussion will be what the future will hold for the Padres and how the roster shapes out right now.

So, as you have read last week, the Padres made a bevy of moves to bolster their roster, with players in the minors being shipped out all across the country. The talk around the league is what will they do with all of those extra outfielders? How will A.J. Preller solve the right-handed lineup conundrum? My say in all of this is simply I don't know. I can speculate as to what will happen, which is what I will do. With all those outfielders, I honestly see a trade involving one of the newly acquired big bats to acquire somebody else. Rumors have been swirling about Cole Hamels coming from the Phillies to the Padres, but he still has so much of his contract to eat that I do not really see that happening. As far as the right-handed bat issue, I think it is interrelated to the problem of too many outfielders, and again, I cannot predict the future with this one. Padres fans are beginning to trust A.J. Preller and the moves he is making. Just remember back to the winter of 2012-2013 when the Padres spent a mere $3 million dollars in the offseason (Jason Marquis) and compare it to this offseason. Pretty amazing isn't it? We'll see what else happens that waters the mouths of Padres fans. There are some other issues that I have not discussed, like the fact that the Padres' defense is now probably one of the worst in the league when, in previous years, they prided themselves on pitching and defense. But I am excited to see a new angle to a franchise that has seen a series of years of futility followed by one or two winning campaigns.

Meanwhile, the college football bowl season is in full swing! Even though we have yet to see any of the big boys play in their games, there have been some amazing games. The best games have occurred over the past few days. I will only mention a few, but feel free to check out any of the bowls you like. Hit the link to see. First, the BYU vs. Memphis game was wire to wire as it went into overtime. The Tiger kicker blasted a 55-yard field goal to tie the game at the end of regulation. In overtime, both teams kicked field goals, which led to another OT. The whole game was chippy as jawing and mean words were shared the entire game from both sides. After Memphis scored a touchdown to open up the next overtime, BYU QB Christian Stewart threw an interception to end the game and their season. As soon as the celebrating began, a fight broke out among both teams. Frustration for BYU and retaliation for Memphis. What was a very good game was now tainted by the unnecessary post-game actions. Meanwhile, the next day brought one of the most memorable bowl finishes in college football history in the Popeyes Bahamas bowl. Western Kentucky and Central Michigan were in a blowout -- at the end of the third quarter, the score was 49-14 in favor of WKU. But then the Chippewas stormed back, owning the fourth quarter. With one second left, the score was 49-42 and CMU had the ball on their own 25-yard line. The QB chucked it as far as he could, being caught by his teammate, who, after several laterals to other teammates, facilitated in helping their team score a touchdown and give them the opportunity to either win or tie the game. The coach initially called for only one point, but somebody mentioned, "Why not go for two?" He looked around and saw the support of his players. It was a fade rout to the back end of the end zone, and it was incomplete. Western Kentucky holds on to win! What an amazing finish to an amazing game that will go down for the ages! Those are the two games that I will mention, but feel free to check out the highlights and more from the link above.

In the NFL, the Chargers have the opportunity to claim the wild card this Sunday against the Chiefs in Kansas City. The Chiefs will be without Alex Smith due to a lacerated spleen, so the Chargers should be able to have their work cut out for them as they take on the backup, Chase Daniels.

In the NBA, Christmas day action was superb. The game of the day, however, had to be LeBron's return to Miami against the Heat. It was an emotional game as the Cavaliers went down against the Chris Bosh-less heat. In San Antonio, Russel Westbrook took control in the fourth quarter and led the Thunder to a victory over the Spurs, who seem to be struggling without Kawhi Leonard. Looks like a good season is coming to pass! Less than 4 months until playoff time!

Well that is it for this week! Happy new year and talk to you again in 2015!

From Pretender to Contender

What a crazy busy week we have just witnessed for my San Diego Padres! The San Diego fan base (myself included) is ecstatic about the recent additions to the Padres' roster. It seemed like every day this week brought something new. Let's get to the details:

Trade #1: Wednesday
Padres receive from Rays: OF Wil Myers and C Ryan Hanigan
Rays receive from Padres: C Rene Rivera, P Burch Smith, and minor league 1B Jake Bauers
Nationals receive from the Padres: Minor league SS Trea Turner and Minor league pitcher Joe Ross
Rays receive from Nationals: OF Steven Souza

Trade #2: Thursday
Padres receive from A's: C Derek Norris and P Seth Streich
A's receive from Padres: P Jesse Hahn and Minor league P R.J. Alvarez

Trade #3: Friday
Padres receive from Braves: OF Justin Upton and P Aaron Northcraft
Braves receive from Padres: Minor league P Max Fried, Jace Peterson, Minor league 3B Dustin Peterson, and Minor league OF Mallex Smith

Trade #4: Friday
Padres receive from Red Sox: 3B Will Middlebrooks
Red Sox receive from Padres: C Ryan Hanigan

I watch many sports shows on TV and they are all blown away at how much work the Padres are doing trying to bring in some bats to bolster the lineup. I am also with them in terms of unbelief. As an avid Padres fan, I have never EVER seen anything like this from any previous GM: willing to trade away touted prospects in order to make the major league club immediately better. Some of the prospects above hurt, in particular; especially Trea Turner and Mallex Smith. I know that no Padre that has emerged from the minors in recent years has had much success at the plate, but these trades we are getting proven, everyday major leaguers.  I am not used to this and am frankly kind of scared. But I have full faith in what A.J. Preller is doing. I do not think he is done, either. I could see him getting some bullpen depth by trading away an outfielder or two whom we do not need. The Padres have 6 regular outfielders on their roster now: Kemp, Upton, Myers, Smith, Maybin, and Venable. Don't forget about the likes of Rymer Liriano, Carlos Quentin, and Abraham Almonte. Upton is only contract for one more year, after which he may test the free agent market. Although depending on his productivity this year, the Padres will probably offer a contract extension.

As I sit on the couch or the stands this next upcoming year, now I do not have to beg to see runs cross the plate. Our lineup will bring so much fear to the hearts of opposing teams that the confidence level of the fan base and players alike will increase. One thing that is worth mentioning is that all of these bats the Padres have acquired in the past week or so are right handed power-hitters. That may become an issue. But for now, I am confident that all of these players are ready to show what they can do on the field which is to drive in runs and help us win some games. With many power-hitters such as Upton, they are prone to many strikeouts along with their RBI's and home runs. We'll see what happens, however. Spring training is over two months away and I cannot wait.

Meanwhile, the college football bowl season kicks off tomorrow! Too bad I'll be driving all day. Please watch at least one for me and then tell me how it is. Here is the schedule for tomorrow:

R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl: Nevada vs. LA-Lafayette 11 a.m. ET ESPN
Gildan New Mexico Bowl: Utah State vs. UTEP 2:20 p.m. ET ESPN
Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl: Utah vs. Colorado St. 3:30 p.m. ET ABC
Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: W. Michigan vs. Air Force 5:45 p.m. ET ESPN
Raycom Media Camellia Bowl: South Alabama vs. Bowling Green 9:15 p.m. ET ESPN

These 5 games kick off a bowl season which is bound to be exciting as the new year is welcomed with the first playoff games in FBS history.

In the NFL, the playoff teams seem to be emerging out in front of the pack. This weekend should be interesting with the Cardinals taking on the Seahawks in Seattle with first place in the NFC on the line. The Chargers play the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara. They will most likely have to win out in order to make the playoffs. It is times like these that make you shake your head as a fan of a team that had high hopes but will just be on the outside looking in. It is a time for smiling if your team just made it into the last wild card spot. The Chargers will be staying in San Diego at least one more year. The team has been looking for a new stadium to build for the past 14 years now. If they do not find a spot, we may hear the Chargers coming from Los Angeles.

In the NBA, Rajon Rondo was traded to the Mavericks. This will greatly influence a team to hopefully get one more NBA title for Dirk Nowitzki. The west has 8 teams looking to reach the finals this year. Somebody has to lose. We'll just have to wait and find out who it will be come summer time.

Well that just about does it. I have stated the facts and hope that this news brings excitement and enthusiasm to any sports fan...especially a Padres fan.
