World series preview and college football 10/18/14

I apologize for not posting on Friday night. I went to the temple and was busy with homework. I also had to go to bed early because the next day I had a field trip. My priorities will occasionally prevent me from making a post on time. But let me get onto my post, shall I?

So this week was rather depressing when it comes to sports. Not much exciting material on days other than Saturday. However, the baseball playoffs ended last Thursday in a very depressing way. I have a passionate hatred for the San Francisco Giants. In 2010, they were in a tight race with my San Diego Padres to win the wild card. I heard rumors that my Pad-squad were going to trade for a bat in the form of Cody Ross in order to help their lineup down the stretch. Upon hearing this rumor, the Giants pounced on him and picked up Ross before the Padres could. They went on to win the world series. That annoyed me so much. Fortunately I was on my mission when the Giants won in 2012. I didn't have to witness the awful celebration in San Francisco. Travis Ishikawa sent the Giants to the world series this past Thursday with a walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth. Fortunately I didn't watch it. The Giants will be playing the Kansas City Royals. The Royals out-played the Baltimore Orioles in ever aspect of the game throughout the ALCS earning the sweep and therefore 8 straight playoff wins. I predict the Giants will win. I really, really, really want the Royals to win, but the Giants never seem too be beaten in these situations under manager Bruce Bochy. I don't even know why Bochy left San Diego. I hear fans complain about Bud Black all the time. I believe in my team's manager, but it hurts to see Bochy doing so well (and Jake Peavy too).

My Padres are already off to a good start in the off-season under new GM A.J. Preller as he has made some front office changes. Preller is expert in foreign scouting as well and is eying Cuban sensation Yasmani Tomas. This player will most likely cost three figures and with the Padres' wallets deeper than ever, it is time to show us Padres fans that we have some work to do and want to put a winning team on the field. Come April, just think at how good we will be with Tomas, Yasmani Grandal, and Yonder Alonso in the beef of the lineup. My mouth moistens at the thought. The avid baseball fan might think that is weird, but just think about it. We could have 3-twenty homer players in the lineup - and with phenomenal pitching depth, we will be an immediate playoff contender.

Meanwhile, in the college football world, it was not as exciting of a week as last week. There were some big games, though, and some upsets. The biggest upset of the weekend was West Virginia topping the likes of 4Baylor in Morgantown.I love a good upset. 7Alabama destroyed 21Texas A&M 59-0! That never happens in the SEC West! My 14K-State wildcats defeated the 11Oklahoma Sooners in Norman 31-30 thanks to a missed PAT and earlier a missed field goal. The kicker must be kicking himself after this weekend (get it? It's supposed to be funny). The most anticipated game of the day, however, was 5Notre Dame taking on 2Florida State in Tallahassee. The Seminoles pulled the comeback and won the game 31-27. I didn't watch it, but apparently there was a pretty controversial call on Notre Dame before Jameis Winston led his team down the field for the eventual game-winning score. It was a holding call that allowed that to transpire. I trust the referees so I will go with that. Other notable games yesterday was LSU defeating Kentucky 41-3. That has propelled the Tigers into the top 25 yet again at 24. Finally, 12TCU easily defeated 15Oklahoma State 42-9. They look like to be a contender for the college football playoff later this year. This season is getting so exciting! I can't wait to see how it all transpires.


In other news, the NBA starts again in about a week and a half and the NFL is in full swing. My Chargers were defeated in San Diego by the Kansas City Chiefs 23-20. I was kind of bummed but whatever. College football for October 11th 2014

Upon request, I will be posting a special college football look ahead for games tomorrow. I just finished watching the Royals beat the Orioles 8-6 in 10 innings. What a great game! This post will mainly be focused around College Football.

This weekend is looking to be another exciting weekend with games across the country. The main center of attention, however, will be in the SEC west. Let's start in College Station, Texas where 14Texas A&M will host 3Ole Miss at 9 PM ET. Ole Miss is coming off of their biggest win of the year beating Alabama at home. The Rebels' defense is allowing 10 points per game, on average. This is their highest ranking since 1962.

Earlier, 3Mississippi State hosts 2Auburn after the Tigers easily tamed LSU last week. This University will be hosting the College Gameday show on ESPN before the Bulldogs' date with the Tigers at 3:30 PM ET. Dak Prescott looks to be the favorite to win the Heisman now that Todd Gurley from Georgia has been suspended indefinitely for selling his autographs. Speaking of 13Georgia, they travel to Columbia, Missouri (near my mission) to take on the #23 ranked Mizzou Tigers. After losing to Indiana a few weeks ago, the Tigers seek revenge against an in-conference opponent. In order to find out if any of these games will be televised nationally, you'll have to find out yourself. All of the big games will be.

Outside of the SEC, let's turn our attention to the BIG 12 where 5TCU heads to Waco, Texas to face 9Baylor in a highly anticipated game. Since TCU beat Oklahoma last week in Fort Worth, they have risen to their highest ranking in 5+ years. Defense has become the key for this team; and with a Baylor offense as deadly as the Basilisk off of Harry Potter, this will be an interesting game at 3:30 ET.

Later in the evening, downtrodden USC heads to Tuscon to take on Rich Rodriguez and his 10Arizona Wildcats. After beating Oregon in Eugene last week, the expectations are high in Tuscon while the Trojans look to bounce back after a devastating loss to Arizona State on a hail Mary pass to end the game.
Meanwhile, the #12 ranked Ducks travel down to Pasadena to take on 18UCLA. Both teams suffered defeat last week in a dramatic week of college football. UCLA fell to Utah in Salt Lake while the aforementioned Arizona Wildcats took care of Oregon.

Well there ya have it! Looks like it will be a pretty fun and entertaining week of action. BYU lost to UCF last night in OT. So hopefully that trends well to a dramatic change of rankings and favorites as we get closer and closer to witnessing College Football's first 4-team playoff in history.
